New Collaborators: Jon Smith & Mic Gillette

About Jon Smith:

Recognized as one of the most soulful sax players around, teamed up with childhood chums Edgar Winter and Jerry LaCroix to form Winter’s world-renowned White Trash band in the latter part of 1969. Born in southern Louisiana, Jon is a self-taught musician whose first gig came at the age of 13, and whose dominant tenor sax sound and solid horn arrangements played a key role in the great success of Edgar Winter’s White Trash.

For over four decades Jon’s colossal talent has been sought out by some of the biggest names in the music industry. Jon has recorded with the Grammy-winning group Toto, Albert Collins, Randy Newman, European superstar Peter Maffay, The Doobie Brothers, and Dr. John, to name a few. His rich, unique sound and solo ideas have often been compared to those of King Curtis, David “Fathead” Newman, and Cannonball Adderly.

Currently working on his first solo CD, which is being produced with his old friend, arranger, and keyboardist, Larry Sieberth, Jon recently relocated to Northern California after his New Orleans home and personal effects were destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina.

About Mic Gillette:

Mic has continually proven himself as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. Born and raised in Northern California’s East Bay area, Mic, a child prodigy, first picked up a trumpet and was reading music at the age of 4. By the time he was 15, he joined the Gotham City Crime Fighters, which later evolved into the Tower of Power, and by the end of his freshman year of college, the band had cut their first album, East Bay Grease.

Taking a brief hiatus from TOP, Mic toured and recorded with the band Cold Blood. Upon his return a year later, the Tower hit the road, opening for big name acts like Santana and Creedence Clearwater Revival. As their reputation as the premier horn band in the U.S. grew, they toured with Elton John, Rod Stewart, Heart, and the Rolling Stones, among others. Over the years, Mic has appeared on hundreds of recordings, his discography reading like a “Who’s Who” of rock ‘n roll. He has accumulated over a dozen Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Record Awards, and arranged horns and played on Santana’s Grammy-winning Supernatural CD.

In 2005, Mic released his inaugural solo CD, Ear Candy, to critically-acclaimed reviews. Reuniting Emilio Castillo, Stephen “Doc” Kupka, Greg Adams, and Skip Mesquite – the original Tower of Power horns – along with TOP bassist Rocco Prestia, and former Tower lead vocalist, Lenny Williams, for his album, and Ear Candy continues to receive accolades from fans and fellow-musicians alike. In addition to his new collaboration with Jon Smith, Mic is also a member of the Strokeland Superband; Tortilla Soup, a ten-piece band from Northern California’s Bay Area who plays everything from funk to salsa; Funky Loophole (Mic’s own band); and has recently toured and recorded with The Doobie Brothers and Santana.

MicNJon Radio Show- Legendary brass man Mic Gillette, best known for being one of the original members of the Tower of Power horn section, and tenor sax blues monster, Jon Smith, who made a name for himself as part of Edgar Winter’s White Trash band, have joined forces, making a long-time dream of working together a reality. Along with performing together they have begun the MicNJon radio show. SoulRadioOnline is proud to add the MicNJon show to its broadcast.
